  • Muscle Tissue: Function, Types, and How It Works
The only tissue that is able to contract and shorten in the body is muscle tissue.

There are three types of muscle tissue:

    * Skeletal muscle: This is the type of muscle that is attached to bones and allows for voluntary movement.

    * Smooth muscle: This type of muscle is found in the walls of internal organs, such as the stomach and intestines, and is responsible for involuntary movements, like digestion.

    * Cardiac muscle: This type of muscle is found only in the heart and is responsible for pumping blood throughout the body.

While other tissues like nervous tissue can transmit signals and epithelial tissue can form barriers, only muscle tissue has the unique ability to contract and shorten, generating force and movement.
