  • Understanding Metabolism: Catabolism & Anabolism Explained
    There are two main parts of metabolism, not four:

    1. Catabolism: This is the breakdown of complex molecules into simpler ones, releasing energy in the process. Think of it as "breaking down" or "deconstructing" food for fuel. Examples include:

    * Digestion of food

    * Breakdown of glucose for energy (cellular respiration)

    * Breakdown of proteins into amino acids

    * Breakdown of fats into fatty acids and glycerol

    2. Anabolism: This is the building up of complex molecules from simpler ones, requiring energy input. Think of it as "building up" or "constructing" molecules for growth and repair. Examples include:

    * Synthesis of proteins from amino acids

    * Synthesis of carbohydrates from glucose

    * Synthesis of fats from fatty acids and glycerol

    * Growth and repair of tissues

    These two processes are constantly happening in our bodies, working together to maintain life.
