  • Gametes: Understanding Chromosome Number in Sperm & Egg Cells
A gamete (sperm or egg cell) has half the number of chromosomes found in a normal body cell.

    Here's why:

    * Body cells (somatic cells): These cells are diploid, meaning they have two sets of chromosomes (one from each parent). Humans have 46 chromosomes in their body cells, arranged in 23 pairs.

    * Gametes: These cells are haploid, meaning they have only one set of chromosomes. Humans have 23 chromosomes in their gametes.

This is important for sexual reproduction. When a sperm and egg cell combine, they create a zygote with a full set of 46 chromosomes, half from the father and half from the mother.
