  • Growth Hormone: Understanding Dwarfism & Gigantism
The hormone responsible for both dwarfism and giantism is growth hormone (GH), also known as somatotropin.

    Here's how it works:

    * Dwarfism: A deficiency in growth hormone production during childhood can lead to pituitary dwarfism. This results in slow growth and a final height significantly shorter than average.

    * Giantism: Excessive growth hormone production during childhood can lead to gigantism. This results in abnormally rapid growth and a final height much taller than average.

However, it's important to note that:

    * Not all dwarfism is caused by GH deficiency: There are other conditions that can lead to short stature, such as skeletal dysplasias (bone disorders).

    * Giantism is rare: It's usually caused by a benign tumor in the pituitary gland, which produces excess GH.

Therefore, GH plays a crucial role in regulating growth, and its imbalance can lead to both dwarfism and giantism.
