  • Underground Stems: A Guide to Bulbs, Corms, Tubers & Rhizomes
There are many plants that survive as underground stems! Here are a few examples with different types of underground stems:

    * Bulb: Think of onions, garlic, tulips, and lilies. These plants store food and nutrients in a round, underground stem called a bulb.

    * Corm: Similar to bulbs, but the stem is solid and not layered. Examples include crocus, gladiolus, and freesia.

    * Tuber: Potatoes are the most familiar example. Tubers are swollen underground stems that store food.

    * Rhizome: Ginger and bamboo are examples. Rhizomes are horizontal underground stems that can send up new shoots.

    * Tuberous root: Sweet potatoes and dahlias store food in thickened roots that function like underground stems.

Let me know if you'd like more information about any of these types of underground stems!
