  • Female Gametes in Non-Vascular Plants: Eggs and Reproduction
Non-vascular plants, also known as bryophytes, produce eggs as their female gametes.

    Here's why:

    * Gametes are sex cells. They are haploid, meaning they have half the number of chromosomes compared to a regular cell in the plant.

    * Female gametes are called eggs. They are large and non-motile.

    * Male gametes are called sperm. They are small and motile, allowing them to swim towards the egg for fertilization.

Non-vascular plants like mosses, liverworts, and hornworts have a life cycle that alternates between a haploid gametophyte stage and a diploid sporophyte stage. The gametophyte is the dominant stage, and it's the one that produces the gametes.
