    The powerful flight muscles of birds are attached to a large breastbone called the keel.

    The keel is a prominent, bony ridge that extends down the center of the breastbone (sternum). It provides a large surface area for the attachment of the flight muscles, which are responsible for flapping the wings and propelling the bird through the air.
