  • Trace Fossils: Understanding Evidence of Ancient Life
    A fossil that is not an organism is called a trace fossil.

    Trace fossils are not the remains of a dead organism itself, but rather evidence of the organism's activity. These can include:

    * Footprints: Tracks left behind by animals walking or running.

    * Burrows: Tunnels dug by animals for shelter or food.

    * Coprolites: Fossilized feces.

    * Gastroliths: Stones swallowed by some animals to help with digestion.

    * Nests: Places where animals lay eggs or raise their young.

    * Bite marks: Marks left on bones or other objects by predators.

    While trace fossils don't directly represent the organism, they provide valuable information about their behavior, movement, and environment.
