  • The 3 Sphincters That Control Your Body's Digestive System
You're likely thinking of the three main sphincters involved in digestion:

    * Upper esophageal sphincter (UES): Located at the top of the esophagus, it prevents food and air from going back up into the pharynx (throat).

    * Lower esophageal sphincter (LES): Found at the bottom of the esophagus where it connects to the stomach, it prevents stomach acid and food from backing up into the esophagus (causing heartburn).

    * Anal sphincter: Located at the end of the rectum, it controls the release of feces from the body.

    Other sphincters in the body:

While less commonly discussed, the body has other important sphincters. For example:

    * The pyloric sphincter: Located at the junction of the stomach and the small intestine, it controls the flow of partially digested food (chyme) from the stomach into the duodenum.

    * The sphincter of Oddi: Controls the flow of bile from the gallbladder and pancreatic juice from the pancreas into the duodenum.

Remember, these are just a few examples, and the human body has many other sphincters involved in various functions.
