  • Understanding Pathogens: Causes of Infection and Illness
Organisms that enter the body and make you sick are called pathogens.

There are different types of pathogens, including:

    * Bacteria: Single-celled organisms that can cause infections like strep throat, pneumonia, and food poisoning.

    * Viruses: Tiny particles that can only reproduce inside living cells and cause illnesses like the flu, measles, and COVID-19.

    * Fungi: Multicellular organisms that can cause infections like athlete's foot, ringworm, and yeast infections.

    * Parasites: Organisms that live on or inside another organism and benefit from it, often at the host's expense. Examples include tapeworms, roundworms, and malaria parasites.

    * Prions: Misfolded proteins that can cause fatal brain diseases like Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.
