  • Extranuclear Genes: Location and Function in Eukaryotic Cells
Extranuclear genes, also known as cytoplasmic genes, are found in organelles within the cytoplasm of eukaryotic cells.

Here are the two main organelles where extranuclear genes are located:

    * Mitochondria: These are the powerhouses of the cell and contain their own DNA called mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA).

    * Chloroplasts: These are the sites of photosynthesis in plant cells and contain their own DNA called chloroplast DNA (cpDNA).

Important Note: While extranuclear genes are not located within the nucleus, they still play important roles in cellular function. For example, mtDNA codes for proteins involved in cellular respiration, while cpDNA codes for proteins involved in photosynthesis.
