The light-dependent process conducted by green plants but not animals is photosynthesis. Photosynthesis is the process by which plants use sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and glucose. The light-dependent reactions occur in the thylakoid membranes of chloroplasts, and they use the energy of light to split water and produce oxygen and ATP. The ATP is then used to drive the light-independent reactions, which occur in the stroma of the chloroplasts. The light-independent reactions use the ATP and NADPH produced in the light-dependent reactions to reduce carbon dioxide and produce glucose.
