  • Bulbourethral Glands (Cowper's Glands): Function & Importance
    The bulbourethral glands also known as Cowper's glands are male accessory sex glands. They secrete a small amount of fluid during sexual excitement and are considered the male equivalent of the female Skene's glands. During sexual arousal, the bulbourethral glands squeeze out several drops of clear fluid into the male urethra. This seminal fluid acts as a lubricant, reducing the friction that the penis feels when it enters a female's vagina during intercourse. The fluid from the bulbourethral glands also helps to neutralize any acidic urine that often remains in the urethra after urination, protecting sperm cells from the damaging effects of urine.

    The bulbourethral glands are usually pea-sized and are located just below the prostate gland. These pea-sized glands are usually located between the rectum and the prostate. They lie on either side of the male urethra, just below the prostate. The glands' ducts open up on either side of the male urethra, so that its contents can be directly transported to the tip of the penis.

    The bulbourethral glands receive sympathetic nerve supply from the inferior hypogastric plexus while parasympathetic supply arises from the pelvic splanchnic nerves.
