  • ATP Functional Group: Understanding the Role of Phosphate
The functional group found in ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is a phosphate group. ATP consists of an adenine molecule bonded to a ribose molecule, which in turn is bonded to three phosphate groups. The phosphate groups in ATP are linked by high-energy bonds, and the hydrolysis (breaking) of these bonds releases energy that is used by the cell for various cellular processes.
