The process of copying DNA and cutting out the desired part is commonly known as gene cloning or recombinant DNA technology. The molecule responsible for cutting specific DNA sequences are called restriction enzymes. These enzymes act like molecular scissors, recognizing and cleaving the DNA molecule at specific nucleotide sequences called restriction sites. The sticky ends or cohesive ends generated by these cuts can be joined together by another class of enzymes called DNA ligases, covalently sealing the DNA fragments and enabling the formation of recombinant DNA molecules.
