  • Angel Alcala: Pioneering Biologist & Conservationist | University of the Philippines
Ángel C. Alcala (July 12, 1929–March 23, 2008) was a Filipino biologist and conservationist. He was a professor emeritus at the University of the Philippines Marine Science Institute and the former director of the Silliman University Marine Laboratory.

    Contributions as a Biologist

    - Herpetology:

Alcala was an expert in herpetology, the study of reptiles and amphibians. He conducted extensive research on the distribution, ecology, and conservation of amphibians and reptiles in the Philippines. He described numerous new species of amphibians and reptiles, including the Philippine forest turtle (Siebenrockiella leytensis) and the Palawan flying lizard (Draco palawanensis).

    - Marine Conservation:

Alcala was a pioneer in marine conservation in the Philippines. He helped establish the Silliman University Marine Laboratory in Dumaguete, which became a center for marine research and conservation in the country. He also played a key role in the establishment of marine protected areas in the Philippines, including the Apo Reef Natural Park and the Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park.

    - Environmental Policy:

Alcala was actively involved in environmental policy and advocacy. He served as a member of the Presidential Commission on Environmental Protection and Natural Resources and the Philippine Council for Sustainable Development. He also represented the Philippines in various international forums on environmental conservation and sustainable development.

    Awards and Recognitions

Alcala received numerous awards and recognitions for his work in biology and conservation, including:

-Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service (1992)

    -Philippine National Scientist Award (2000)

    -ASEAN Biodiversity Hero Award (2005)

    -Goldman Environmental Prize (1992)

    -WWF International President’s Award (1990)

Alcala's contributions to biology and conservation have had a significant impact on the Philippines and the world. His work has helped to protect endangered species, establish marine protected areas, and promote environmental sustainability. He is considered one of the most influential biologists and conservationists in the Philippines.
