A diploid organism has two copies of each chromosome, one inherited from each parent. During meiosis, the process by which gametes are formed, the chromosomes are separated and each gamete receives one copy of each chromosome. Therefore, if a diploid organism has 22 chromosomes, its gametes will have 11 chromosomes.
