The first commercial sports drink, called Gatorade, was developed in 1965 by University of Florida researchers Dr. Robert Cade, Dana Shires, and James Free. The sports drink was designed specifically to replace fluids and electrolytes that are lost during strenuous exercise, and it was named after the University of Florida's football team, the Gators.
