  • Hobbit Brain Size: A Scientific Analysis
    No, the brain size of the Hobbit is not unfeasibly small relative to the size of its body. The hobbit genus, classified as Homo floresiensis, was a species of small-bodied hominins discovered on the island of Flores in Indonesia.

    Scientists have conducted studies and comparisons of the brain size of Homo floresiensis with other hominin species, including modern humans. Although Homo floresiensis had a smaller brain size compared to modern humans, it was not disproportionately small relative to their body size.

    Some paleoanthropologists estimate the brain volume of Homo floresiensis to range between 380 to 430 cubic centimeters, which is smaller compared to the average brain volume of modern humans, which ranges between 1200 to 1700 cubic centimeters. However, Homo floresiensis had a relatively small body size, with individuals standing at an average height of around 1.1 meters (3.5 feet).

    Considering their body size, the brain-to-body size ratio of Homo floresiensis is not unusually small when compared to other primates. Their estimated encephalization quotient (EQ), which is a measure of brain size relative to body mass, falls within the range observed in other primates, including modern humans.
