  • Understanding Female Sexuality: Flexibility and Complexity
Female sexuality is often thought to be more flexible than male sexuality because of the way in which it is biologically determined. While male sexuality is largely driven by the hormone testosterone, which leads to a relatively straight-forward pattern of sexual arousal and activity, female sexuality is shaped by a more complex combination of hormones and physical structures. This, in turn, allows for greater variation and flexibility in the ways in which women experience sexual attraction, desire, and arousal. Furthermore, societal norms and expectations have historically allowed women more freedom to express and explore their sexuality in different ways than men.
