    Woodpeckers repeatedly bash their heads against trees when searching for food and building nests. At these times their brain experiences forces many times higher than what would cause a concussion in a human — yet the woodpeckers show no ill effects. Their beaks evolved shock-reducing mechanisms, while their skulls evolved extra reinforcement. Their brains are smaller than their skulls, offering further protection because there’s room for the brain to move during impact
