Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi form symbiotic relationships with the roots of most plants. These fungi help plants absorb nutrients from the soil, such as phosphorus and nitrogen. In return, plants provide the fungi with carbohydrates. Some AM fungi can also help plants resist drought and disease.
