  • Mitochondrial Dysfunction: Understanding the Role of Reduced Mitochondria & ROS
Reduced mitochondria produce high reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS is essential for many cell processes, such as immune defense and apoptosis. Reduced mitochondria also play a role in controlling oxidative phosphorylation and ATP production. When the cell demands high energy, reduced mitochondria increase ATP production. Reduced mitochondria can also cause apoptosis if their ROS production is excessive.
