A telescope is your window to the cosmos, letting you explore the Moon, planets, and distant stars with unprecedented detail. Vivitar’s refractor telescopes are designed for beginners and seasoned observers alike, featuring a dual‑lens system that delivers crisp, color‑accurate views. Each kit includes a 60× and a 120× eyepiece for high‑magnification study, a sturdy tripod, and a 3× optical finder scope to simplify alignment.
Light pollution from streetlamps, porch lights, and car headlights can wash out faint objects such as galaxies and nebulae. Select a location away from artificial lights; the Moon and planets remain bright enough to observe even in modestly lit areas, but deep‑sky targets thrive in darkness.
Loosen the thumb screws, extend the legs to a comfortable height, and verify that all three legs are level. Tighten the screws securely and place the tripod on a flat, stable surface.
Slide the telescope’s mounting plate into the tripod’s mount and tighten the two thumb screws to secure it. Ensure the telescope stands upright and is balanced before proceeding.
Begin with the Moon—it’s large, bright, and offers familiar features for newcomers. For planets and deeper objects, a sky chart or planetarium app will help you locate them quickly.
Use the 3× optical finder to locate your target. Center the object in the finder’s field of view, then adjust the telescope’s tube to bring the same object into the eyepiece.
Insert the 60× eyepiece into the focuser and turn the focus knob until the image sharpens. This magnification is ideal for most Moon and planetary observations.
For finer detail, swap in the 120× eyepiece. Because higher magnification is more sensitive to atmospheric turbulence, use this setting when conditions are calm and steady.
Observe the Moon easily from any site; for faint deep‑sky objects, seek a dark location. On windy nights, favor the 60× for steadier views.
Never look directly at the Sun through any telescope without proper solar filters. Doing so can cause permanent eye damage.
