  • Understanding Sun Halos: Causes and What They Indicate
When you see a circle around the sun, it's called a halo. Here's what it means:

    * It's an optical phenomenon. Halos are caused by sunlight interacting with ice crystals suspended in the atmosphere, typically in high-altitude cirrus clouds.

    * It's a sign of high altitude ice crystals. The shape of the ice crystals and how they refract (bend) the sunlight create the circular pattern.

    * It's not a rainbow. While both are caused by light interacting with water droplets or ice crystals, halos are different from rainbows. Rainbows are caused by the reflection and refraction of sunlight through spherical raindrops, while halos are caused by refraction through hexagonal ice crystals.

    * It can come in different forms. Halos can appear as rings, arcs, or even pillars of light, depending on the orientation of the ice crystals.

In short, a halo around the sun is a beautiful and harmless optical effect that happens when sunlight passes through ice crystals in the atmosphere.
