  • Charon Discovery: Who Found Pluto's Largest Moon?
Charon, the largest moon of Pluto, was discovered by James Christy on June 22, 1978.

He was working at the US Naval Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, and noticed a slight bulge on images of Pluto taken several weeks apart. This bulge was caused by the gravitational pull of Charon, which was orbiting close enough to Pluto to create a noticeable distortion in its shape.
