    There are 88 officially recognized constellations in the modern astronomical system.

    These constellations are a result of a long history of human observation and categorization of the night sky. While there are many more groupings of stars that people have observed and named throughout history, the International Astronomical Union (IAU) standardized the 88 constellations in 1922.
