  • HD 168746: Unveiling the Central Star of the Ring Nebula
The central star of the Ring Nebula (M57, NGC 6720) is called "HD 168746".

It's a white dwarf, a very dense and hot star that is the remnant of a Sun-like star that has exhausted its nuclear fuel. It's the core of the star that created the nebula itself.

The intense ultraviolet radiation from this white dwarf is what causes the gas in the nebula to glow.
