  • Friedrich Bessel: Pioneer of Stellar Parallax and Distance Measurement
The mathematician and astronomer who made accurate measurements of thousands of stellar distances was Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel.

He is best known for his groundbreaking work in stellar parallax, which is the apparent shift in the position of a star due to the Earth's motion around the sun. By measuring this shift, Bessel was able to determine the distance to the star 61 Cygni in 1838, making it the first successful measurement of the distance to a star beyond the solar system.

Bessel's work revolutionized our understanding of the scale of the universe and laid the foundation for modern astronomy.
