  • Constellations Near the Big Dipper: A Guide to Draco and Ursa Minor
The constellations next to the Big Dipper depend on which "side" you're looking at:

    * To the east (right) of the Big Dipper's bowl: You'll find Draco the Dragon. The Big Dipper's two "pointer stars" (Dubhe and Merak) point towards Polaris, the North Star, which is at the tip of Draco's tail.

    * To the west (left) of the Big Dipper's bowl: You'll find Ursa Minor, the Little Dipper. This constellation is smaller and less prominent, but it contains Polaris.

    * Above the Big Dipper's bowl (toward the north): You'll find Cepheus, the King.

    * Below the Big Dipper's bowl (toward the south): You'll find Boötes, the Herdsman and Leo, the Lion.

It's worth noting that the Big Dipper itself is part of the larger constellation Ursa Major, the Great Bear.
