  • Leo Constellation: Myth, History & Location in the Night Sky
Leo, the Lion, is not a constellation because of a person named Leo. It's one of the 88 constellations recognized by the International Astronomical Union.

The story behind the constellation Leo is rooted in ancient Greek mythology:

    * The Nemean Lion: In Greek mythology, the Nemean Lion was a fearsome beast with impenetrable hide, sent by the goddess Hera to terrorize the city of Nemea. The hero Hercules, as one of his twelve labors, was tasked with killing the lion. He managed to strangle the lion to death and then wore its hide as a cloak, which is where the lion's constellation is thought to represent.

    * The story of Leo: The constellation is depicted as a lion, specifically the Nemean Lion, and is said to have been placed in the sky by the Greek god Zeus as a reward for Hercules' bravery.

So, Leo is not a constellation because of a person named Leo, but because of the mythical Nemean Lion.
