However, there are other stars that could be considered "North Stars" in the sense that they're near the celestial poles:
* The South Star: There's no single bright star perfectly aligned with the south celestial pole, but Sigma Octantis is the closest. It's very faint, though, making it difficult to find.
* Future North Stars: Due to Earth's wobble, the celestial poles change over time. In a few thousand years, Thuban (a star in Draco) will be the North Star.
* Other "North Stars" for different civilizations: Depending on where you live on Earth, the stars near your celestial pole will change. For example, if you were on the equator, there wouldn't be a "North Star" at all!
So, while Polaris is the most prominent and easily identifiable North Star today, other stars can and will be considered "North Stars" depending on time and location.
