  • Lunar Maria: Understanding the Dark Plains on the Moon
    The large stretches of dark sand and dust scattered over the moon's surface are called maria (singular: mare).

    The word "maria" is Latin for "seas," a name given by early astronomers who mistakenly thought these dark areas were bodies of water. We now know that maria are vast plains of solidified volcanic basalt.
