  • Sputnik 1 & Luna 2: The First Space Probes and Their Missions
    The first space probe was Sputnik 1, launched by the Soviet Union on October 4, 1957. However, it didn't travel to another celestial body, it was simply the first artificial satellite to orbit Earth.

    The first space probe to reach another celestial body was Luna 2, also launched by the Soviet Union on September 12, 1959. It impacted the surface of the Moon.
