  • Earth's Orbit: Understanding its Elliptical Shape
    The orbit of the Earth around the Sun is shaped most like an ellipse.

    It's not perfectly circular, but it's very close. An ellipse is a slightly squashed circle, with two focal points. The Sun is located at one of these focal points, not in the center of the ellipse. This means that the Earth is slightly closer to the Sun at one point in its orbit (perihelion) than it is at another point (aphelion).
