  • Plato's Celestial Motion: The First Proposal of Circular Orbits
The first ancient Greek philosopher to propose perfect circular motion for celestial objects was Plato.

While other philosophers, like Pythagoras, had speculated on the celestial bodies' movement, Plato formalized the idea in his Timaeus dialogue. He believed that the perfect and eternal nature of the heavens demanded a perfect and eternal form of motion, which he argued was circular. This concept profoundly influenced later philosophers and astronomers, including Aristotle and Ptolemy, who developed models of the universe based on Plato's ideas.
