    The first spacecraft to successfully land on Mars was Mars 3.

    While it landed on December 2, 1971, it only managed to transmit data for about 20 seconds before losing contact.

    The first successful Mars landing with a functioning lander that transmitted data for a longer period was Viking 1, which landed on July 20, 1976.
