  • Lunar Maria: Understanding the Dark, Smooth Plains of the Moon
The dark areas on the moon that are smooth and reflect little light are called maria (singular: mare).

The word "maria" is Latin for "seas," a name given by early astronomers who thought these dark patches were bodies of water. We now know they are vast, ancient plains of solidified volcanic basalt, created by massive volcanic eruptions billions of years ago.
