  • Solar Flares: Understanding Intense Energy Bursts on the Sun
The violent storm on the sun that has huge clouds of large bright loops or arches of gas is called a solar flare.

    Here's why:

    * Solar flares are sudden, intense bursts of energy from the sun's surface. They are often accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CMEs), which are massive expulsions of plasma and magnetic field from the sun's corona.

    * The bright loops or arches you describe are actually prominences, which are large, cool clouds of gas that are suspended in the sun's atmosphere, the corona. They are often associated with solar flares, as the intense energy from the flare can cause the prominence to erupt and become much larger.

While solar flares and prominences are distinct phenomena, they are often linked, and the combination can create a spectacular and potentially dangerous event.
