  • Lunar Landscapes: Understanding the Moon's Seas and Mountains
No, there are no seas or mountains on the Moon in the way we understand those terms on Earth.

    Here's why:

    * "Seas" are not bodies of water: The dark, flat areas on the Moon that we call "maria" (Latin for "seas") are actually vast plains of solidified lava. They were formed by ancient volcanic eruptions billions of years ago.

    * "Mountains" are not formed by tectonic plates: The Moon's mountains are formed by impacts from asteroids and meteorites. These impacts created craters, some of which are so large they are considered mountains.

So, while we use the terms "seas" and "mountains" to describe features on the Moon, they are very different from their Earthly counterparts.
