While Jupiter's Great Red Spot is famous for its powerful storms, Neptune's winds have been clocked at speeds exceeding 2,100 kilometers per hour (1,300 miles per hour). That's roughly twice the speed of the fastest winds recorded on Earth.
These incredible wind speeds are driven by a combination of factors:
* Internal Heat: Neptune emits more heat than it receives from the Sun, which contributes to the planet's powerful atmospheric circulation.
* Rapid Rotation: Neptune spins very quickly on its axis, which generates strong Coriolis forces that influence the wind patterns.
* Lack of Solid Surface: The lack of a solid surface allows the wind to move unimpeded across the planet.
While Neptune's winds are truly impressive, they're also incredibly difficult to study directly due to the planet's immense distance from Earth.
