  • Understanding New Moons: Why the Moon's Far Side Appears Dark
    That's called a new moon.

    Here's why:

    * Lunar Phases: The moon doesn't produce its own light; we see it because sunlight reflects off its surface. The different shapes we see, called lunar phases, are caused by the changing angles of the sun, Earth, and moon.

    * New Moon: During a new moon, the moon is positioned between the sun and Earth. This means the side of the moon facing us is completely in shadow, making it appear dark and invisible.
