The first spaceship to land on the Moon was Luna 2, a Soviet spacecraft. It was launched on September 12, 1959, and crashed into the Moon on September 14, 1959.

While Luna 2 was the first to *reach* the Moon's surface, it wasn't a controlled landing. The first spacecraft to successfully land on the Moon and transmit data back to Earth was Luna 9, also a Soviet spacecraft, which landed on February 3, 1966.

The first *manned* spacecraft to land on the Moon was Apollo 11, which carried astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin to the lunar surface on July 20, 1969.
