The first US spaceship to orbit Earth was Explorer 1, launched on January 31, 1958.
It was a small, cylindrical spacecraft designed primarily to study cosmic rays. While not carrying any humans, it successfully completed over 58,000 orbits before re-entering Earth's atmosphere and burning up in 1970.
