  • The Horn Antenna: Unraveling the Cosmic Microwave Background
The observational tool that helped Arno Penzias and Robert Wilson discover the cosmic microwave background (CMB) was a horn antenna.

This antenna was originally designed for satellite communication research but was being used by Penzias and Wilson to study radio waves from the Milky Way. They noticed a persistent, low-level noise that seemed to be coming from all directions in the sky, which they couldn't explain. This "noise" turned out to be the CMB, the leftover radiation from the Big Bang.
