  • Understanding Moon Phases: What's the Illuminated Shape Called?
The shape of the lighted part of the moon is called a lunation or phase.

    Here's why:

    * Lunation: This refers to the entire cycle of moon phases, from New Moon to Full Moon and back again.

    * Phase: This specifically describes the illuminated portion of the moon as seen from Earth at any given time.

So, while the shape of the illuminated part is what we visually observe, it's more accurate to call it a phase of the moon.
