  • What is the Sun Made Of? Understanding Solar Composition & Energy
The sun is a star, not a ball of fire. Here's why:

    * Fire needs oxygen: Fire is a chemical reaction that requires oxygen to burn. There's no oxygen in space, so the sun can't be a ball of fire.

    * Sun's energy source: The sun's energy comes from nuclear fusion. This is a process where hydrogen atoms combine to form helium, releasing enormous amounts of energy in the form of light and heat.

    * Plasma, not gas: The sun is made up of extremely hot plasma, which is a superheated gas where electrons are stripped away from atoms. This is different from the gas we breathe and experience on Earth.

So, while the sun looks like a ball of fire, it's actually a giant ball of plasma powered by nuclear fusion!
