  • Planetismal Theory: Formation of Planets in Our Solar System
    The Planetesimal Theory is a model that explains how planets formed in our solar system. It was first proposed by Victor Safronov in the 1960s, building upon earlier ideas by T.C. Chamberlin and F.R. Moulton at the beginning of the 20th century.

    Here's a breakdown of the theory:

    1. Solar Nebula: The theory starts with a vast cloud of gas and dust, called the solar nebula. This nebula is primarily composed of hydrogen and helium, along with small amounts of heavier elements.

    2. Gravitational Collapse: The nebula begins to collapse under its own gravity. As it collapses, it spins faster, creating a flat, rotating disk. The center of the disk becomes increasingly dense and hot, eventually forming the proto-Sun.

    3. Dust Grains: Within the disk, dust particles collide and stick together, forming larger particles called planetesimals. These are small, solid objects that can range in size from a pebble to a small asteroid.

    4. Accretion: Planetesimals continue to collide and accrete, growing in size and mass over millions of years. This process is known as accretion. As they grow larger, their gravity becomes stronger, allowing them to attract more planetesimals and dust.

    5. Formation of Planets: Eventually, the planetesimals become large enough to form the protoplanets. These protoplanets continue to grow through accretion, eventually becoming the planets we see today.
