The protostellar stage for a star like our Sun lasts roughly 100,000 years.

This is a very short period compared to the star's entire lifetime, which is about 10 billion years. During this stage, the protostar is still gathering mass from the surrounding cloud and heating up due to gravitational contraction. Once the core becomes hot and dense enough to start nuclear fusion, the star enters the main sequence phase.
