First Telescope in Space: NASA vs. Sputnik 3 - A Historical Overview
NASA didn't build the first telescope placed into orbit. The first telescope in space was the
Soviet Union's Sputnik 3, launched on
May 15, 1958. It carried a variety of instruments, including a
telescope designed to study the Sun.
The first NASA-built telescope in orbit was the Orbiting Solar Observatory (OSO-1), which was launched on March 7, 1962.
